Automatic Fire Suppression Systems Using Inert Gases

The principle of operation of gas fire suppression agents used in modules and banks of gas fire suppression "Inert Gas" is based on creating in sufficiently tight premises or volume a required concentration of gas fire suppression agents leading to a decrease in the oxygen content to a level of 15% and below, with which combustion is practically impossible.

The following gases may be used as fire suppression agents in modules and banks of gas fire suppression "Inert Gas":

  • ARGON — is a monoatomic inert gas, non-conductive, and colourless and odourless (according to standards NFPA IG-01), with a dew point of minus 20°C, at a concentration of basic substance of 99.99%;
  • NITROGEN — is a diatomic, non-conductive gas, colourless and odourless (according to standards NFPA IG-100), with a dew point of no higher than minus 20°C, at a concentration of basic substance of 99.6%;
  • ARGONITE — is a non-conductive gas mixture, colourless and odourless (according to standards NFPA IG-55): argon (50% ± 5%) and nitrogen (50% ± 5%), with a dew point of no higher than minus 20°С;
  • INERGEN — is a non-conductive gas mixture, colourless and odourless (according to standards NFPA IG-541): nitrogen (48.8%—55.2%), argon (37.2%—42.8%) and carbon dioxide (7.6%—8.4%), with a dew point of no higher than minus 20°С.

Other inert gas mixtures may also be used.

Module of gas fire suppression "Inert Gas" (technical specification No. 7843ME01) is designed for long-term storage of compressed fire suppression gas at pressure and its release into the protected volume or premises for fire suppression. It can be used both independently and as part of the bank of automatic fire suppression system.

The module consists of:

  • steel high pressure cylinder (200/300 bar) with a fire suppression agent with a cylinder capacity of 80 or 140 l;
  • lock and release device with DN = 12 mm with the module safety diaphragm, pressure gauge and electromagnetic devices and pneumatic actuator.

The module is connected to the pipeline through the high-pressure hose, siphon tube is not available.

The systems based on gas fire suppression agent Inergen have recently enjoyed a greatest demand. This is explained that it has a high efficiency of fire suppression; this composition is safer for humans than pure inert gases.

Calculation of the gas mass is performed in accordance with Annex E SP 5.13130.2009.

Modules of "Inert Gas" units with any of the gas fire suppression agents are available in 2 versions: with a nominal pressure of 200 atm. and 300 atm.

The maximal amount of a gas fire suppression agent is indicated in the table below:
